* Actually apart from Lilla everybody on the institute understands or even speaks German (or sort of German as in David’s and my case) but in conversations with the non-Austrians only English is used. But yesterday I had a little talk with Lucie, die Czech colleague, – and she then asked me whether I’d mind to talk German to her, because she had studied it and wanted to practice. Oh, yes that’s what I needed! No, but really she’s really nice and I’m looking forward to learning more about her PhD-thesis; she’s writing on the relationship between Austrians and Bohemians, or rather the relationship between the two languages from about 17th to 19th century. So finally I’ve met another fellow historian. (David and Kamilla are doing political sciences, Alicja English Literature and Lilla Psychology). And as for the language, I think I’ll sacrifice myself and try to do some good, for example that the correct expression for “Look!” is not “Kuck!” but “Schau!”...
**Uschi has advised me not to use the dryer for the laundry because they’re so bad for they environment. I agree, however, when I did my first laundry I was forced to do without the dryer because my landlord, Vaclav, had some of his laundry in it and it was later in the evening so neither did I wan to to disturb him, nor did I dare to put his dry clothes out of the dryer (I did so once in London when a guy wasn’t taking his clothes for half an hour and I wanted to get it done and just when I had put them out that student arrived and he was really angry so I’m careful now.) Whatever, I also didn’t want to leave my laundry in the washing machine because it would have remained there for the whole next (working) day. So I stole the little clotheshorse (Waeschestaender) and let the laundry dry the usual way. The following evening some T-Shirts where still not completely dry and when they finally were the morning after they did, to say it politely, not gave off the nice scent of freshly washed laundry. (In other words: They stank terribly.) So basically I have the decision between damaging the environment with the dryer, or by always putting only three pieces of clothes in the laundry in the hope that these would be few enough to dry properly. And even that probably wouldn’t work, the last towel I used for cleaning the bathroom needed two days to dry. After all, remember, it’s a cold dark cellar.
Whatever, so I did my laundry yesterday and put everything in the dryer and as it was ready that I was happy that within two hours I had the laundry washed and dry and ready to use. But hmm. Suddenly I realised that my new socks – before my departure I bought seven pairs of socks all black but they have in different colours the names of the weekdays on it. Very useful I thought, H&M if anyone happens to be interested – so my new socks had decided that they were not “normal” but “delicate” (those where the two temperatures I could chose) and where, eh, slightly smaller than those I didn’t wash. But they still fit. Also it seemed to me that my grey T-Shirts which are the most important ones because I can combine them with everything, are slightly just a little bit tighter now. Hmm. I don’t know whether this is just a paranoid imagination, but I’m sure I’ll find out. If I’m approached at by a significantly higher number of gays than usually I know I better buy new ones..
*** David and me watched Spain today morning and surprisingly, the O’Byrnes Pub looked completely empty. There were two or three Spanish in the back but in the front, at the nice screen, nobody. All tables empty. Dead. Damned – I should have taken a picture. A comparison of O’Byrne’s Today 8:30 (half an hour of the match played) and Elephant&Castle Sunday 8:30 (half an hour before the match) – I reckon the difference couldn’t be more striking.. Well that we were there today was my fault, I was so convinced that the exiting France-Switzerland group would be in the morning that I didn’t re-check I only realised when I arrived there – 5 minutes late as usual.. By the way, my guess for that match: France beats Togo, South Korea beats Switzerland, so today’s winners make it. My hope though would be that France doesn’t win and Switzerland and South Korea or even Togo make it. Underdogs rule! (Unless they play England, Holland or Portugal – but these three too are kind of underdogs compared to Brazil and Argentina..).

Well my guess about the French group was at least 50% correct, that's still a 4 (pass). And considered that I haven't studied for this exam (i.e. I haven't seen any matches of those teams) I'd consider it a success..
