Gee, that was a long break now. Nothing interesting happening and I'm too lazy to be creative at the moment. Well the only thing I wanted to write about was Remembrance Day 10 days ago, but instead I've been struggling whether I could organise my thoughts well enough for a letter to the editor. We'll see..

Anyway - today is the day. We'll be going to Rexall Place to watch Oilers vs Flames. Aaawesome!

A short episode: The hockey game Edmonton vs Calgary is commonly dubbed "the battle of Alberta", so yesterday when I sent an e-mail to my friend Anya about when to meet this week I wrote that Tuesday wouldn'tt work for me because I'd go "to Rexall Place to watch 'the battle of Alberta'". Surprisingly I got the reply: "the battle of Alberta sounds interesting--what is it?" Haha! I started to wonder whether she's really Albertan or rather some kind of alien just pretending to be. But then - she's a woman, and aren't women something like strange, incomprehensible aliens anyway? :-)

Just a short comment about Borat: I'd rate the movie to about 7 or 8 out of 10. Quite funny, hilarious szenes, but not 80 minutes of constant laughing as the hype suggested. In my opinion it was a bit too much of sexism and antisemitism, a bit too much aimed at offending people rather than provoking them. And of course the mobvie could have been longer! :-)

This was actually my first time here in one of the big mainstream Multi,- Mega- or whatever-plex-Cinemas. (The previous two times I watched films of film festivals.) So I had my own personal experience of "Cultural Learnings of America"; a little trip into the western consumer society:

We had one ticket too much because one friend didn't show up so we were worried to find someone who would buy it from us otherwise we might have to pay that ticket. At the counter we were told that returning a ticket is no problem at all - until 30 minutes after the film has started! Doesn't that encourage buying? If you go to a movie and you figure out that you hate it, you can leave within the first half hour and get all your money back. Isn't that amazing? Imagine trying that in Austria! :-)

The second strategy: If you want something it's always the cheapest to take the biggest. The price of a popcorn and drink combo was actually quite high (8 bucks) but for only one little extra dollar you could "upgrade" both to large (or extra-large or whatever they call this size). So I ended up with about a litre of coke and a bag of popcorn a size I'd usually share with one or two friends! And then the nice guy at the counter informed us, that we can get free refills! Oh my! Where would I put a free refill? It's not surprising that this policy makes people fatter and fatter.

Buy! Buuuy! Munch! Muuunch!

It's Movie Night. "Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan". Der Hype hier ist unglaublich, vor allem weil vor der Promotion der letzten Wochen kaum jemand Sacha Baron Cohen oder die Ali G. Show kannte. Und ich frage mich, wieviele Leute eigentlich ins Kino gehen, ohne den Hintergrund zu kennen.) Wie auch immer, ich bin gespannt!!!

Falls ihr vorhabt, euch den Film anzuschauen, bitte bitte bemueht euch, ob ihr nicht die Originalfassung zu sehen bekommt. Hier der Vergleich: Englischer Trailer und Deutscher Trailer. Vielleicht bin ich die Originalstimme einfach schon zu sehr gewohnt, aber ich finde die deutsche Synchronisation einfach fuerchterlich. Brrr! Vor allem sind ja ausser Borat und dem Producer alles echte Leute - kann man Situationskomic, Tonfall etc einfach uebersetzen? Ich glaube nicht. Zum Beispiel der Fahrlehrer im Trailer klingt doch voellig unecht. Grausig, grausig. Also nur Mut - Borat ist Auslaender mit starkem Akzent, also werden die Leute ueblicherweise ganz langsam und deutlich mit ihm sprechen. Make Benefit for yourself!

Und ueberhaupt, ich vergass. Ich hab vor ein paar Tagen auf orf.at gelesen, dass ganz Oesterreich in Angst und Schrecken vor einem allfaelligen Bruno Film lebt. "Alpenrepublik als internationale Lachnummer" - eine Schlagzeile die wohl die tiefsten Aengste aller patriotischen OesterreicherInnen erwecken soll: "Oh nein! Die ganze grosse boese Welt lacht ueber unser armes kleines gutes Land. Jo derfn s denn des?" Wie auch immer. Hat jemand von euch auch abseits dieser Orf-Story davon gehoert? Ich muss sagen, ich fuerchte mich nicht wirklich. (Eher davor, dass der Film schlecht wird, an der rolle muss Cohen noch arbeiten, der Akzent ist ja nicht berauschend.) Mir waere es auf jeden Fall lieber, auf einen unechten Bruno angesprochen zu werden, als auf einen echten Haider. Ich finde, die Oesterreichische Tourismus Werbung sollte reagieren und die Chance nuetzen. Wenn es um Bruno auch so einen Hype gibt, ist "Austria" fuer ein paar Wochen, wenn nicht Monate, in aller Munde. Unbezahlbare Publicity. Geschickt gemacht sollte es kein Problem sein, Oesterreich als hippes Party- und Urlaubsziel zu praesentieren..
