Now, I've already been in Rexall Place (the Edmonton Oilers' stadium). This Tuesday, two months earlier than expected. Eric caught special sale tickets for a pre-season game - for 5(!) bucks from Elephant&Castle. Wicked!

So there we were, watching a 3:1 victory over Phoenix Coyotes, who are coached by the legendary Oilers' player Wayne Gretzky (the only name of an NHL player I knew before coming here and probably the only one I'll still know after having returned home). Thanks to Eric I passed another lesson of "Hockey Rules for Dummies" - so now I finally know how off-side works in hockey..

The stadium is nice although that day there were plenty of free seats (what's the point of selling the tickets for about 30 bucks - which is not so much cheaper than during regular season - instead of having a full stadium?) and of course it was just a friendly game - so the atmosphere was not overwhelming. But man, now I'm even more looking forward to the Calgary game. That's gonna be awesome!

Also we got free Oilers T-Shirts (well, we earned them by filling out some promotion forms). There is just one problem. The design I prefered (and chose) was only available in size "L", which obviously is too large for me. So I need your help. I know, as a man I should actually be quite proficient in ruining laundry.. yet.. help wanted: "Shrinking Clothes for Dummies". No kidding, I'd really appreciate suggestions: How can I effectively and systematically shrink the T-Shirt? It should be quite a bit smaller (size "S" or "M" instead of "L" I guess), but of course I still want to wear it (i.e. it shouldn't be size "XS" afterwards) and of course the design shouldn't be destroyed either. Shall I wash it 60C instead of 40C? Or shall I rather put it into the dryer choosing "hot" instead of "delicate"? If I wash/dry it too hot once and it's still too large can I repeat the procedure, or will the material reach the maximum shrinking after the first time? Any deliberate or undeliberate experiences?

Today Eric forwarded an E-Mail of some Peter from Hungary (an internet-soccer-buddy I suppose). Just some quotes:

Of course! If something goes wrong, blame it on the Jews! The Jewish-Bolshevik plot letting down the good, hard-working people. Sounds all too familiar.. :-(

"Clear them out from political life" - by means of violent demonstrations? Well that doesn't sound like a stable, healthy democracy either.

So to me that is a classic example of criticising the rule of pre-1989 elites in present Hungary by means of pre-1945 rhetorics. Not a good combination for the 21st century..

Etwas mehr als drei Monate nach dem ersten Besuch in der Hungarian Hall folgte gestern der zweite. Anlässlich Kingas Einführung in die ungarische Community begleiteten wir sie (mit Ausnahme von Premek, der mit Mitgliedern der tschechischen Community unterwegs war, dafür nahm ich Eric mit).

Auf dem Programm stand wieder ungarische Volksmusik und -tanz. Nachdem ich das letzte Mal einen sehr netten Abend hatte (und einige Leute in der Zwischenzeit noch einmal noch einmal, im ungarischen Pavillon beim Heritage Festival wieder gesehen habe) kehrte ich fröhlich und unbeschwert zurück.

Auch wenn der Nachmittag und Abend wiederum sehr nett war begann er ebendort zunächst mit einer - für mich schockierenden - Lektion in punkto der ungarische Sensibilität im Bezug auf unsere gemeinsame Vergangenheit.

Kurz nach der Ankunft holen Eric, Kinga und ich uns ein Bier. Eric und ich stoßen an und wollen dann auch mit Kinga anstoßen, auf dass es ein erfolgreicher Nachmittag für sie werde. Sie schüttelt den Kopf, behält das Glas bei sich und erklärt:

Nachdem die Revolution in Ungarn 1848/49 (von den österreichischen Truppen, mit großzügiger russischer Hilfe) niedergeschlagen wurde, wurden die 13 Anführer (in Ungarn die 13 Märtyrer) in Arad hingerichtet. Nach der Hinrichtung, so die Legende, sollen die österreichischen Offiziere mit Bier auf ihren Sieg angestoßen haben. Aus diesem Grund stoßen Ungarn nicht an, wenn sie Bier trinken.

Zwar hielt Kinga selbst offensichtlich nicht besonders viel von diesem Brauch. (Ich weiß nicht, wie viele Pints wir in den letzten drei Wochen schon hatten ohne dass sie das überhaupt erwähnte. Rückblickend: Was für ein doppeltes Sakrileg als Ungarin gerade mit einem Österreicher mit Bier anzustoßen!) Aber sie nahm ihn Ernst genug, um ihn in einer Halle mit vorwiegend der älteren Generation entstammenden Ungarn zu respektieren, und kein Missfallen zu erregen, was für mich eine deutliche Sprache davon spricht, wie bedeutend die Geste, und wie heikel die Angelegenheit ist, oder zumindest bis vor einer Generation war.

Das hat mich auf jeden Fall wieder einmal daran erinnert, Fremden gegenüber meine Zunge im Zaum zu halten, was allfällige Scherze über Österreich-Ungarn betrifft. Und das nach 157 Jahren! - Stichwort: Laut einem Artikel auf orf.at soll der Brauch ursprünglich auf einen Zeitraum von "nur" 150 Jahren beschränkt gewesen sein - womit er eigentlich nicht nicht mehr gültig waere. Ich werde Kinga wohl morgen fragen, ob sie eruieren kann, wie man in der ungarischen Community zu dieser Frage steht..

Brauch hin oder her haben Ungarn nichts unversucht gelassen, um Matthias und mich zu überzeugen, in ihrer Tanzgruppe mitzumachen und irgendeinen pollonaiseartigen Tanz für eine Aufführung Mitte November einzustudieren. (Jaja, dafür sind wir dann wieder gut genug! :-) Ich weiss noch nicht, ob ich mich nicht breitschlagen lassen soll. Abgesehen von Matthias machen alle meine KollegInnen mit, und angeblich soll es ja "very, very easy" sein. Ich wandte zwar ein "No matter how 'very, very easy' a dance is, I'm always one 'very' worse.." - aber nicht einmal das schreckte sie ab. (Vielleicht sollte ich es mit österreichisch-ungarischen Witzen probieren.) Mal schaun..
